The East End has no shortage of trendy brunch spots and artisanal cafés, but when you’re looking to save a few bucks and still eat something great, there are some real gems hiding in plain sight. These spots might not be flashy, but they deliver big on flavour without the big price tag. Here are three of my favourite go-to cheap eats when I want something tasty, filling, and easy on the wallet.

Lahore Chaat & Desi Burger House
 📍 1344 Gerrard St E, just east of Greenwood Ave
 Tucked into Little India, this Pakistani fast-food spot is a saviour, especially after a night out when everything else is closed. Open until 4AM, Lahore Chaat serves crispy veggie samosas for just $2 a pair, plus perfectly spiced gol gappay (pani puri). The chai is rich, milky, and made fresh to order ideal for late nights out. If you’re craving comfort food with serious flavour, this is where you need to go.

Gale’s Snack Bar
 📍 539 Eastern Ave, near Carlaw Ave
 A real-deal time capsule that’s been holding it down for over 50 years. Gale’s is a classic, cash-only diner with prices that feel like a typo. All of the sandwiches are under $5, and the vibe hasn’t changed in decades. Don’t expect anything fancy, just solid portions, fast service, and a piece of East End history on your plate. A must-visit for vintage Toronto energy and budget-friendly bites.

New Bakery
 📍 661 Gerrard St E, between Broadview & Degrassi
 Right in the heart of East Chinatown, New Bakery is easy to miss but impossible to forget. The staff are kind, the trays are always full, and the prices are so low they feel illegal. BBQ pork buns go for 2 for $1, egg tarts for 50 cents, and they’ve got cheap dumplings, noodles, and even short ribs if you want a bigger meal. Whether you’re grabbing a quick snack or loading up for later, this is one of the most underrated spots in the East.
